Speaker Series: Inherited Knowledge with Tarryn Andrews
Where did ideas about health and the human body come from? This talk explores how modern medical knowledge developed from ancient Greek and Roman scientific thought and why this is relevant today. Ancient physicians understood illness in ways both familiar and alien to us. From the Hippocratic Oath to the theory of the four humours, these ideas were preserved and reinterpreted throughout history and well into the early modern period, forming the basis of modern medical science. Through an examination of topics such as anatomy, women’s health, and medical remedies, this talk considers how this knowledge was preserved and adapted over time.
