Create Your Own Youth Program

Make your own Program! In addition to a tour of the house and the grounds choose from the selection of crafts and activities below for a customized experience.

Crafts

Beaded Jewellery Craft (15-30 minutes): In this craft, the kids will make beaded jewellery which they can take home with them at the end of the program!

Marble Sculpture Craft (15-30 minutes): In this craft, the kids will have the opportunity to make sculptures just like Beatrice Hillary’s in the Drawing Room.

Paper Dolls Craft (15-30 minutes): In this activity, the kids will assemble and decorate paper dolls similar to the ones the Hillary children would have played with.

Cross Stitch Craft (30-45 minutes): In this activity, the kids will learn basic cross stitching techniques, which was a common activity among children in the past.

Watercolour Painting (15-30 minutes): The kids will have an opportunity to paint the landscape and architecture of the Hillary House and the Barn.

What I Saw! Craft (15-30 minutes): Following a tour of the house and grounds, the kids will have a chance to draw a picture of something they really liked or found interesting in the house. They will then have the opportunity to share their pictures with the group.

Woven Fabric Coaster Craft (30-45 minutes): In this activity, the kids will learn how to weave a coaster out of yarn, which is a skill that would have been used by the Hillary children.

Noisemaker Craft (15-30 minutes): In this musical craft, the kids will make tambourines which they can then decorate as they please.

Humming-Flute Craft (15-30 minutes): In this musical craft, the kids will create a kazoo-like instrument which they can then decorate with a variety of mediums.

Shoe Box Guitar Craft (30-45 minutes): In this musical craft, the kids will create their very own guitar which they can then decorate before they play!

Games and Other Activities

Ball of Wool Game (15-30 minutes): This is an early version of table air hockey using only a ball of wool!

Laughing Game (15-30 minutes): This fun game will undoubtedly have the kids laughing! A perfect icebreaker game!

Stereoscope Viewer (15 – 30 minutes): Try out a Victorian Stereoscope, an early precursor to the 3D movie, and learn how it works! Compare it to a 1950s Viewmaster and look at different slides.

Circle Story Game (15-30 minutes): In this creative activity, the kids will invent a story about the Hillary House together.

Scavenger Hunt (30-45 minutes): In this activity, the kids will have the opportunity to search through the house for a selection of artifacts.

Archaeology Walk (30 – 45 minutes): Explore the property with an AHS staff member and learn how archaeology has helped us discover where things used to be located. Search for real archaeological fragments that are often turned up by animals or severe weather.

Folk Songs – Maple Leaf Forever and Land of the Silver Birch (15-30 minutes): The kids will partake in a sing-along with some of our country’s traditional songs!
