downloadWhen: Wednesday September 20, 2017 7pm to 9pm

About: “History of the Phonograph and Recorded Sound”
An entertaining presentation of this life-changing invention, with illustrations and demonstrations of antique phonographs from the early 1900s to the 1950’s.

These fascinating “talking machines” are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face when you hear them play. Canadian Antique Phonograph Society members Mike Bryan and Keith Wright will demonstrate several antique “talking machines” while telling the story of the phonograph from its invention through to the 1950s. They’ll bring to life the inventors and their power struggles, taking a look at the social conditions and fashions that supported the huge growth of the recorded music industry.
Recorded sound features strongly in our lives through radio, TV, public announcements, voicemail and, of course, music CDs and records. However, throughout most of mankind’s existence sound could only be heard live. Imagine the excitement of hearing a voice recorded and played back for the first time ever. How and why did it happen? What was the purpose? Who were the visionaries that led the way? Learn about the first “format war” and the battles that shaped the recorded music business. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn about the early days of this high stakes industry while being entertained by the sounds of a bygone era.
